Nasdaq is first and foremost an electronic stock trading medium, but also an index.

Never knew that. Learned something today. :)

It's amazing how people who hang out at a site dedicated to Apple don't really know anything about Apple R&D. This is so old news. But here for your edification:

    http://www.intel.com/technology/io/thunderbolt/index.htm

Take hard note of the sentence: "Developed by Intel (under the code name Light Peak), and brought to market with technical collaboration from Apple."

What's amazing is how you haven't provided a citation to match your earlier post :

TB was envisioned by Apple and then handed off to Intel for development and implementation.

So again, Citation needed. The citation provided does not indicate Apple envisionned TB, only that they collaborated with Intel on the project, which might or might not be after the fact that Intel envisionned the tech and not Apple.

Again, you state Apple basically came up with it, burden of proof lies on you for this. I don't think I've ever heard that about LightPeak until this thread. It always either was a joint venture or an Intel tech developed in collaboration with Apple.

Hmmm, strange. A lot of people got caught out by that little check box, which is why I posted it.

Yeah, check box doesn't matter. No playcount updates. Can anyone confirm if it fixed in this new version? I will have to wait till I get home late this evening to test.

From what I see most iPhone owners protect their investment with a case. I.E. you don't see what pretty color you phone is. (the reason i don't care about how my phone looks)

LOL you didn't even know about the outage until i posted a link. now it was just some tiny network glitch that wasn't the run of the mill ;)

did i ever say apple's was gonna be the biggest and the baddest? the funny thing is....i use amazon vod all the time on my roku....so naw, i'm not really an apple fanboy but thanks for assuming.

Then what the hell was the point in your little rant?! Your whole argument was based on a rare outage. My original point was that Amazons 10 datacenters will work better than Apples 1...my point still stands.

FYI: I was very aware of the outage. I run a cloud virtualization (Xen based) company built on S3, GoGrid and Rackspace.

    Here? Never.

Online surveys are worth the paper they are written on. The best data suggest that iPhone marketshare in the US is stagnant and Android based handsets are booming

Yeah... and based on sales, not surveys, the iPhone sure is hurting now given it just had it's best sales quarter ever.

Win... why don't you get it? There is the iPhone and then there is everything else. Android is a good smart phone OS... IMO, the best alternative to the iPhone. But the reality is, people buy an iPhone because they want an iPhone. People buy an Android based phone because they want a phone and it's on sale this week.

Android is not going to slaughter the iPhone. It's a huge market out there and there will always be multiple alternatives for the OS's. If anything, the companies with the most worries are RIM and Microsoft. They continue to loose market share like crazy to Apple and Android based phones.

But please... If you want to fantasias about Android OS phones taking over the world, I'm sure there more people like you over on the Android forums that also have this twisted view. Besides, why does the iPhone worry you so much? It's great that it's there and it's great the Android is there too. The competition is making both solutions better.

Yes, but there has been a massive fail rate in IBM Desktar Models (Hitatchi has bought the IBM hard drive division after). I know the problem won't appear again, and that the current Desktar only shares the name with the problematic one, but I prefer to stay away from Hitatchi drives. There are other brands, and they are priced similarly. I'm losing nothing here.

I've been using the same 500GB Hitachi Deskstar for about 3 years now. No qualms yet. Of course it's just for file storage. I put my OS and apps on my SSD.

An imminent upgrade is probably prudent though. :D 3 years is a bit long for any HDD really.

You want rip-off? Microsoft makes its billions charging hundreds for a 10-cent CD in a dollar's worth of packaging. So does Adobe. Where's your outrage?

seriously? so does Apple, where's your outrage?
how much is OSX again? maybe it would just be easier if you listed all the Apple software that is priced around $1.10

It says it used different frequencies... but then how can people jailbreak/unlock their iPhones and use it on T-mobile?

It's EDGE only, 3G is what uses different frequencies.

If this ipod killer was coming out of MS central (software dev, etc) i wouldn't be concerned. However the team that is working on it (xbox) actually are decently creative.

Also apparently ms has taken a hands off strategy to let the division develop its own creative culture/workflow. Let us remember what really drives the great products from apple - its the creative synergy of many in a culture of passionate people who truly enjoy making things together - a highly collaborative and insanely cool environment.

Because the creative capacity of MS sucks they need to make up with it in cash and market strategy. At least they had the sense to give xbox team freedom from the predominantly borgish world of MS - multiple stupids. - sorry couldn't resist.

Yes. I am sure the number 3-25 top selling smartphones all have hardware keyboards.

The 1 and 2 are both Apple iPhones and they don't have them though.

I suspect the sales figures of the iPhone 4 and 3GS probably surpass the top 8-10 Android devices combined.

That is called marketplace domination. Clearly a lot of people here don't have much business experience or understand how business works, but such control of a marketplace is significant, especially given the number of devices available for sale.

Does HTC sell more smartphones than Apple? Does Motorola? How about Samsung? No, no and no.

I believe samsung is the highest selling smartphone manufacturer when you take into account that it does have its own OS that it still sells. They are currently the highest selling phone manufacturer. It is difficult to compete with the iPhone. One factor many of you are simply ignoring is that if you want iOS on your phone you have to buy an iPhone. If you want android you do not have to buy a nexus. Limiting the amount of models that run the software will funnel all the sales into those models. It makes since when you think about it.

The second thing is do people consider the phone "families". Like how Samsung makes the Galaxy S then they redo it several times in the Year. They release it on different carriers with slightly different bodies and button layout and different radios. It happens their is a Galaxy S phone on every major US Carrier. The LG Optimus 1 is on every US carrier but Boost mobile.

cool thats probably it then, the -16.

the processor trick is with the dev tools. there's a prefpane where u can turn off individual cores, and turn off hyperthreading. too bad there's not a dev tool for overclocking ;)

Parallels sucks but until now its been the only REAL game in town. Boo hoo I'm not paying for an app that IMHO is half baked to begin with. At least I'm not outright going in search of a seral number and pirating the thing. Again its a tide me over until VM gets their butt in gear and releases this thing.

Ahh ok - so if I dont like something then I dont have to pay for it? $80 for an app that, by your own admission, you are using all day every day doesnt sound a lot whether you like the app or not.

    A dumb question (probably?):

I am not a video expert; not a music producer; not a sound engineer; no relation with servers, whatsoever.
So from that perspective, what is in store for me with respect to thunderbold?

    - A normal consumer

I am not a strict normal consumer but I guess 99% of the world is.

As a typical consumer, same as a prosumer, or pro -- speed. For example, backing up your iDevice, importing big megapixel photos and HD videos will be a whole lot quicker.

It will also make connections easier as TB can handled video, audio, and data in the same cable.

    Citation needed.

Being a non-jetsetting 3gs user, this isn't really worth it for me. Maybe I'll get it sometime, but no rush here. :-p

But seeing that it "Contains the latest security updates"...
It would really be nice if small patches and updates like that were distributed through the iOS app store.
OTA updates would be a GOOD thing.
(Especially since Apple store employees are known for insisting iPhone users and iPad users don't necessarily NEED a computer. :-/ )
